"From Randy Newman's 1968 self titled release, 'I Think It's Going To Rain Today' is a devastating piece of music composition. With its evocations of a romantic misery at the heart of a cold, smashed society, it sadly still resonates with today's political and social environment. It's also been said the song is about homelessness and the line 'human kindness is overflowing' is Randy's sardonic tongue and sarcasm in full effect. We cruelly ignore what we don't want to see."
lyrics
Broken windows and empty hallways,
A pale dead moon in a sky streaked with grey.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's going rain today.
Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles,
The frozen smiles to chase love away.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's going rain today.
Lonely, lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.
Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
And I think it's going rain today.
