Fool's Paradise was my first return to a recording studio in almost a decade and my first time ever as a solo artist. Recorded live in a frenzied four hour session in the spring of 2001, many of the vocals are first takes including the group "ahhhhhs" in the mid section. We all just instinctually sang this together, harmonies and all and the second run through is what we kept. I actually love recording this way. I think those first instincts are the right ones and being in the moment, with a deadline starring you down is when magic can and usually happens.
I love how I can feel the energy of the room that night in listening and of all the people involved. There was a lot of love in there. They went out of their way to make this happen and for that I will always be grateful.
lyrics
I cannot lie
I was born before you were.
I’m up at night
Entertaining pleasant thoughts.
I think you’re fine
It’s a blissful ignorance.
You’re pure sunshine
A warm fire when it rains.
(Chorus)
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
I’ve seen the light
And it shines in your eyes.
And I don’t know why
You’re just not giving in.
You’re a delight
You’re icing on my cake.
It’s lilac time
My head is in the clouds.
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
Should I tell you what I’m thinking?
What goes on in my mind.
Should I tell you what I’m feeling inside?
When you’re talking and you’re breathing,
Angels fly out of your mouth
Well, it’s clear see,
When you’re near me,
I’m tongue-tied.
If you don’t mind
I’ll give you daisies from my yard.
Then I’ll say goodnight
And dream of long good-byes.
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
Ooh, living in a fool’s paradise
